Good things take time. The foundation of a congregation does not occur quickly. Paul only had 12 people converted and on fire for the spirit, but at the end of two years the Ephesian region had been evangelized.
The small verses in Acts note when the growth is happening and growing. The conflicts with the Jewish synagogue (note that he stayed there three months, not one visit) and then left because he had failed.
It is therefore more important to be faithful, and do good. It is God who gives the growth. Only when we walk with him will we be effective.
One has to ignore the current bishops and archbishops` planned destruction of the faithful. They are more corrupt than the renaissance Borgias (who, though as murderous, had mistresses not catamites). The faithful will be honoured, and the church will survive this period.
But we will have to move beyond the baptism of John. From the righteousness of the Law to the empowered righteousness of Christ. For his spirit is a spirit of holiness.
19 And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland[a] country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. 2 And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in[b] the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying. 7 There were about twelve men in all.
8 And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God. 9 But when some became stubborn and continued in unbelief, speaking evil of the Way before the congregation, he withdrew from them and took the disciples with him, reasoning daily in the hall of Tyrannus.[c] 10 This continued for two years, so that all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.
I often finish the morning lectionary with the puppies on the bed, writing about a sentence at a time, and listening. For the sounds of a shoe being chewed, or the next play fight. Because Puppies have the spirit of puppies in them. One does not blame a puppy for being what he is.
But they are beasts, and we are men.
We either have the spirit of this age, and that is to hide, to lie, to hate the good, and to be crueil, or the spirit of God, which is joy, gentleness, kindness and a clear eyed understanding that this world will end in perdition.
Christ will call his own. Catholics included.
But there are many of Judas claiming to lead all kinds of churches and congregations. The Protestants are not immune, nor are the Pentecostals or the Orthodox. If someone, as Francis is, is praised to the skies by the media, be probably has the devil in him.
May there be revival. May we, as pewsitters, support the faithful pastorate.
For we will not be like these apostates, who have lost the spirit of holiness.
