The courage of our calling.

Suffering has another purpose, says this blogger, carefully sitting by his laptop, for everything hurts two days after the last workout[1]. It is to limit us. Make us understand there are limits and costs. We are not made to do some things, or to return to the gym post injury and find we do not suffer as muscles just healed as used again [2].

Then I think of the number of great preachers who have physical illnesses. And I consider that the reason Paul has such hatred from the pagans is because he was effective. The pagans want us to be sleek, fat, pain-free and frauds. Like the sons of Scaeva.

Acts 19:11-20

11God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, 12so that when the handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were brought to the sick, their diseases left them, and the evil spirits came out of them. 13Then some itinerant Jewish exorcists tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” 14Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. 15But the evil spirit said to them in reply, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” 16Then the man with the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered them all, and so overpowered them that they fled out of the house naked and wounded. 17When this became known to all residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks, everyone was awestruck; and the name of the Lord Jesus was praised. 18Also many of those who became believers confessed and disclosed their practices. 19A number of those who practiced magic collected their books and burned them publicly; when the value of these books was calculated, it was found to come to fifty thousand silver coins. 20So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.

2 Corinthians 12:2-10

2I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven β€” whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows. 3And I know that such a person β€” whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows β€” 4was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is permitted to repeat. 5On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. 6But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me, 7even considering the exceptional character of the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given to me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. 8Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, 9but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

Mistrust the successful, they are too often corrupt. Those who preach prosperity are peddling a lie. If you are blessed by God, the chances are that you will suffer, or be censored. You will not be approved by the current iteration of society.

They hate Jordan Petersen, who is an inoffensive Jungian peddling Stoic self-improvement. Expect them to hate and regulate the cross. For they do not want revival, and their sins confessed, their grimoires burnt, and the bodies they buried exhumed.

The gospel is preached most powerfully by those who are suffering and in pain. Like Paul, none of us want this.

But those who are greatly blessed often have great travails. That should include us all, for, by the grace of Gdo, we will all be caught up to paradise. This is the hope we proclaim. And this is what the world hates.

But we are called not to be slaves to our desires or the idols of this age. We are called not to be like them. Let us have the courage of our calling.
