Unashamed

Overnight, I put an index site up, and the main site went down — I contacted the webhost, who noted I had an outdated version of PHP up[1], and when that was changed, all loaded well. Another night worrying. Sometimes I wonder why I do this, and why this morning I was grumpy because I thought I could not blog.

I would have read the lectionary anyway, and written notes.

For there is not a thing to be ashamed about in the gospel. There is a great liberty in being able to post, daily, part of the lectionary. Those who try to shame us, who hate us, who even say that the gospel offends them, find themselves aligned with the ungodly and the wicked.

Because sophists are going to sophist, and argue that the evil is good, and the appearance of virtue matters than being virtuous.

Fortunately, this is not new. The current bunch of politicians are not as corrupt as the Romans were, not as perverse or sadistic: they crucified their slaves, strangled their political opponents, and considered their slaves useful tools for slaking their lust.

Paul was not writing about a theory. His description of the degeneration of the soul came from personal observation.

Romans 1:16-25

16For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17For in it the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, “The one who is righteous will live by faith.”

18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and wickedness of those who by their wickedness suppress the truth. 19For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20Ever since the creation of the world his eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made. So they are without excuse; 21for though they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their senseless minds were darkened. 22Claiming to be wise, they became fools; 23and they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling a mortal human being or birds or four-footed animals or reptiles.

24Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the degrading of their bodies among themselves, 25because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

The trouble with being ruled by sophists is that they lie. They have to: for them all that matters is that they are seen to be on the side of the angels, or their client is. They will have no compunction about throwing people away, accusing them of hatred, violence, or belonging to the enemy. Their methods are to unplatform and deperson. They hate in the name of love: even Christian middle school pupils are not exempt[2]. They will accuse veterans of being Nazis.

They lie. And they lose any sense of honour, truth or beauty.

I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power for salvation. Even for those who have been taught to abandon all self-control, and to tolerate ugliness, evil and shame. If Christ converted the Romans, deeply corrupt though they were, he can convert us. May he do so.

For we should not be part of the corruption of this generation.

1. When the host admin moved PHP back to 5.5.0, the site loaded.

2. Look at the comments. The Queerty people are saying she won’t be allowed into college because of what she said in that presentation. Better still, don’t look: the site is hateful.

3. The main picture is often from Gab, I am acknowledging it by putting a screenshot showing who took it. The more beauty is shared, the better.

    Hey Doc,

Still not receiving e-mails on updates to the blog. I guess I will just have to make it a point to stop in from time to time.

That index site had pics of some culinary delights. Did you make those treats?

Love the dragonfly pic. A symbol of water, light and the search for deeper meaning.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    Jack
