The Hell of our Making.

Last night, with the dogs now asleep and the young people going to bed, we ended up watching the Age of Adaline on Netflix. The thesis is that a woman remains aged 39 for nine decades. At the end of the movie, she finds a gray hair, and has joy. For she has begun to age again, and so can remain with the man she has married: for her marriage was a risk, and love a loss, for they died and she remained.

We want to remain young because we have eternity in our hearts, but we want more to be with those who we love. The movie is subversive, because it admires the old. The best speech is given from a father, to his wife of 40 years. Who is not an immortal sprite, but looks every one of those days.

We are made human, and since the fall, we have been mortal. We will all die. And we know that without some form of salvation, we will then all be damned. For all of us have lied, at times (as in the movie) to good people. We have seen cruelty in this world, and we have seen many pull down that which is beautiful, true, and honourable.

And Christ came to save us from this hell of our making.

John 1:29-34

29The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ 31I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1

4:13But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture — “I believed, and so I spoke” — we also believe, and so we speak, 14because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. 15Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

16So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. 17For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, 18because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.

5:1For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

We have eternity within our souls, which is why we are attracted to those who preach some technology that would keep us youthful forever, without the need for discipline that anyone finds they need in middle age. But such people align with those who hate Christ, and have defined Christianity as hate speech. This is sophism, and the sophists have always been those who corrupt, destroy, and seek power as an end, not a means for reform.

Though our society has turned away from Christ, we will not lose heart. When the most recent data indicates that the young earth and intelligent design model fits better with the modern species than the old earth/slow evolution model of orthodox secular thought then either the experiment is wrong, or our theories are wrong.

My money is on the theory being wrong. The good geek knight, who is a better mathematician than I am, comments.

Oh, oh. Pick me, pick me. I know the answer. The answer is that the biological information in living systems was put there by an intelligent agent. You know, the same way that information in books is put there by intelligent agents. And the same way that information in computer code is put there by intelligent agents. And the same way that information in blog posts is put there by intelligent agents. We know what introduces information from our own experience.

Well, what about mutation and selection? Couldn’t they create all this information in a couple hundred thousand years? Well, no. You see, mutation and selection have been tested in the lab to see how much information they can produce over generations and generations. And the conclusion is clear: it is impossible for blind forces to create the amount of information we see in living systems in the short time that is available. In fact, the whole history of the universe is not enough time for evolutionary mechanisms to create the information we have in front of us.

I mistrust linear projections. Most physiology, most engineering, has some form of negative feedback so that homoestatis is maintained. Societies are probably included in this.

But we are made with this sense of eternity within us. And it is only in Christ that we have hope.

This Sunday, as on all days, Choose Christ.Choose not to live for your own will, for you will then make your own hell.
