The pewsitter and the priest.

The chief aim of this life, said the old catechists, was to know God and enjoy him forever. This still applies. It is not the chief aim of the priestly caste, but for us all. In this time, there are no Levites, no Aaronic priesthood, or Brahmins. Instead, those comissioned by the Holy Spirit are our elders. And most of us, this blogger included, do not qualify for this.

So why this blog? Because it is not merely the role of the priest or pastor to speak of Christ. We should speak with our lives, using words when needed.

2 Corinthians 4:5-12

5For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. 6For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

7But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. 8We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. 11For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. 12So death is at work in us, but life in you.

There are things that we can do, must do, shall do. We are called to worship God. We will support the true priest and pastor: they are worth double honour. Preaching the word is hard: doing it every week requires a the work of the Spirit: it cannot be done in your own strength.

We shall attend church: as the commentators on Vox Popoli said, such exist.

And that women have a hard enough job…

Seriously… if you want a biblically sound unconverged church… jump on your favorite search engine and search for church of Christ. rule out any results that say “united church of Christ” as it is literally a fake church for gays.

Now… look at the streetside pics of the churches that are left. The ones without steeples are the conservative ones.

Nate, Vox Popoli

Just off the top of my head, here is a list of mostly unconverged denominations:

Various Mennonite Branches
The Orthodox Presbyterian Church
Reformed Baptist Church (Look for London Baptist confession of 1689)
Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod
Independent Baptist Church
Church of Christ (not UCC – see Nate’s comments above)
Brethren Assemblies
The Eastern Orthodox Church
(Most) Missouri Lutheran Synod Churches
The Greek Orthodox Church
Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches
(Most) Associate Reformed Presbyterian Churches

Get in the fray. Fight for the faith.

The church is the body of Christ. Find a congregation, and stay with it. Pray for the leaders: they are accountable for your souls as well as theirs. Know that the list of denominations helps, but look to the life of the congregations. Healthy congregations have children. In healthy congregations, the men lead, for the women are busy enough sorting out the kids… and that will include, at times, the men looking after bible class, Sunday school and preschool so that their wives can hear the word preached.

Have confidence in this: the battle has been won. The opposition is defeated. It is their cheerleaders that lie to our young, telling them that the time of salvation is past, and they should converge. The duty of us older folks is to tell the young that a similar lie was preached in our time, and it led to the destruction of our society.

So do not be them, do not be like them.

Dog update.

The silly duffer is with the vet, who is internally fixing his fracture. We had to take him back again last night as he was in considerable pain.
